Parachute Silk

There are lots of stories of undies and wedding dresses made from parachute silk from the 1940s. Most of the wartime stories relate to illegally 'acquired' german parachutes which fell on London during the blitz, but post war the government sold off a lot of it's surplus goods and the pattern companies came up with ingenious ways to use it.
See also a pattern for government surplus camouflage netting here.

Ferragamo at the Movies

The Thief of Bagdad (1940) is an early British technicolor Arabian Nights fantasy with costumes by Oliver Messel, Marcel Vertes and John Armstrong. It was influential in it's storytelling, first use of blue screens and chroma key process.

The Princess (June Duprez) and Halima (Mary Morris) wear Salvatore Ferragamo shoes which fit perfectly into the grand spectacle though it seems to owe as much to Mughal India as Persia.
